NV Monasteriolo Cava Brut Rosé
Spain $6.00 @Trader Joe's
A 70% Monastrell/30% Pinot Noir blend, I loved this one and took four bottles to Thanksgiving dinner. It accompanied everything on the
table perfectly. One person in our tasting group detected a little
clove on the nose.
NV Aveleda Vinho Verde
Portugal $6.00 @Beverages and More
Wow! I love this one. I first found it at a wine shop in Northern Wisconsin (go figure), and again here in L.A. Like all Vinho Verde (literally "green wine") it's meant to be drunk very young and fresh, so most is non-vintage dated. Very crisp and delicious with an almost Chablis-like acidity. Look for this one.
2006 Block 50 Chardonnay
Orange, Australia $6.00 @Trader Joe's
If you're a New World Chardonnay lover, you'll love this wine. Nicely balanced with all the oak, butter and fruit you like. FYI, Orange is just a little NW of Sydney.
2005 Evans & Tate Unwooded Chardonnay "Underground Series"
Western Australia $4.00 @Trader Joe's
A definite buy. Nice to see the Aussies making this style wine. All stainless steel, with a laser beam of pure fruit in the center. What a price!
2004 Bocce Zinfandel
California $4.00 @Cost Plus World Market
Wow. I LOVED this one. Great character, great price. Very racy and Italian in style.
2005 Trewa Cabernet Sauvignon
Maule Valley, Chile $4.00 @Big Lots
A nice Estate Bottled Cab with a bit of classic Chilean dust on the tongue. I've seen this one as a house wine in some clubs.
2003 Alexander & Fitch Cabernet Sauvignon
Alexander Valley, California $6.00 @Trader Joe's
A truly terrific buy in Cal Cab. Real bang for the buck!
NV Cavipor Casiero Tinto
Portugal $4.00 @Beverages and More
I had REALLY low expectations for this one, having hated their "blanco" at last month's tasting. What a surprise. Truly yummy and a smokin' price. The kind of thing we live for.
2006 Panarroz Tinto
Jumilla, Spain $8.00 @Costco
An Estate Bottled offering that's made in a decidedly juicy, modern style. A good value.
